Carbon Offsetting
What are carbon Credits?
Carbon credits are permits allowing the holder to emit a specific amount of greenhouse gasses, with one credit typically equaling one metric ton of CO2. Credits are traded on carbon markets to incentivize emissions reductions and promote investment in clean technologies and practices.
How Does SOIL Offset Carbon?
In lieu of accreditation on the voluntary carbon market, SOIL leverages peer-reviewed scientific research to calculate our carbon offsets. Through direct measurements at our composting sites, we've found that SOIL's ecological sanitation services reduce greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 1 metric ton of CO2 per household per year.

How SOIL Partners in the Carbon Offsetting Market
Over the past decade, the carbon offset market has aimed to reduce global emissions, yet organizations like SOIL face barriers to participation due to the high costs of formal accreditation. While businesses and individuals typically purchase carbon credits from accredited organizations, the effectiveness of this model is often questioned, with some companies misusing credits or providing dubious offsets. Smaller organizations, despite their proven carbon mitigation efforts, struggle to compete due to the prohibitive costs involved.
An alternative approach is direct climate partnerships, exemplified by SOIL's collaborations with Global Water Intelligence. This method allows companies to offset emissions by partnering directly with the source of carbon credits, ensuring all funds directly support mitigation efforts. This approach enhances the impact of carbon offset projects and supports broader social and environmental outcomes, presenting a more effective solution for meaningful contributions to global climate goals.
SOIL's Carbon credit Partnerships

Global Water Intelligence
SOIL's groundbreaking carbon-offset partnership with Global Water Intelligence (GWI) began at the 2022 Global Water Summit. This innovative partnership using evidence-based carbon mitigation methodologies outside of the formal carbon market offers an exciting opportunity for carbon mitigation financing for smaller organizations like SOIL.

UltraFacility 2024
This year, SOIL is partnering with one of GWI's sister organizations to make its 2024 UltraFacility Conference carbon neutral. Sponsored by Nalco Water, participants' journey to and from the event will be sustainable, reduce the event's carbon and water footprints, and align with the conference theme of Balancing Sustainable Growth.

Global Water Summit 2025
We are proud to be working alongside GWI once again for their 2025 Global Water Summit, offsetting the carbon produced by attendee travel to and from the event in Paris while also contributing to UN- SDG6. Thanks to carbon offset sponsor, Aqualia, the biggest event in the international water industry will be carbon-neutral and sustainable.
